WORLD RENOWNED RESEARCH FACILITY
System Five, a 4energy group company, is the incumbent maintenance and service provider for the Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. The LMB is a research institute dedicated to the understanding of biological processes which provides knowledge needed to solve key problems in human health.
A KEY COMPONENT OF THE CAMBRIDGE BIOMEDICAL CAMPUS
Costing £212M and designed by RMJM architects, it was opened in 2013 and forms a key component of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The building provides around 27,000m² of world-class workspace and in overall structure, the building is reminiscent of a paired chromosome, with two long laboratory areas joined by a spacious atrium.
MULTIPLE ENREGY SAVING FEATURES
Energy-saving features of the LMB building include heat recovery wheels that exchange energy between outgoing and incoming air, a ground source heat pump, and automatic control of lights to reduce intensity when daylight is available.
250,000 INPUT/OUTPUT POINTS
The heavy plant is housed in an energy centre together with four stainless steel-clad towers linked to the building. Between the floors are full height Interstitial Service Voids (ISVs), which house (amongst other things) the complex BMS which includes over 250,000 I/O points. These ISVs can be accessed directly without entering the laboratories which allows changes to be made rapidly and with minimal disruption.
EXPERT MONITORING OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The BMS is based on the Honeywell Centraline Hawk integration controller which has excellent control attributes and ability to resolve integration issues with numerous disparate items of plant and scientific equipment. The wide range of equipment and systems at LMB demands a high level of integration and the Hawk system allows the monitoring of environmental conditions as well as research instrumentation.
